RiskAssess - Risk Assessments for High Schools

About RiskAssess

RiskAssess is an integrated web-based system that provides risk assessments in a standard printable format specially customised for school laboratories.

Safety data about chemicals, equipment and living organisms are stored in RiskAssess. When you choose a chemical or other item, RiskAssess automatically incorporates safety information into the risk assessment. A series of simple questions leads users through the system, making it easy to perform and to document risk assessments for each experiment.

RiskAssess software provides a convenient and rapid method for Australian schools to meet their legal obligations in a manner that closely follows the Australia/New Zealand/International Organization for Standardization Standard AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 and the Risk Management Guidelines, HB 436:2004.

RiskAssesss can also assist communication between teachers and laboratory technicians in planning and preparing experiments. RiskAssess includes fields relating to the timetabling of the experiment and the items to be used. The teacher can then email this information with the risk assessment to the laboratory technician at the press of a button. Alternatively, the risk assessment can be printed.

Since RiskAssess was launched in July 2008, more than 400 schools have subscribed and over 39,000 risk assessments have been performed.

The Team

RiskAssess has been developed by the EcoSolve Team, led by Dr Phillip Crisp.

Phillip has over 30 years' experience in chemical laboratories and has been teaching laboratory safety for more than 15 years. He has consulted with many teachers and laboratory technicians to help produce a risk-assessment tool that is customised to school science experiments and complies with current legal requirements.

James Crisp is the technical lead for RiskAssess. James started programming when he was in primary school and released commercial software by the end of high school. He was awarded the University Medal for Computer Science at university, and has developed commercial software for over 12 years.
